WHAT IS PROSTATITIS ?

Prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland in men .While this affects men of all ages , it is prevalent among young men and middle-aged men.

Some study suggests that 10 to 12% of  men experience prostatitis symptoms .

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE PROSTATE

The prostate produces seminal fluid that transports sperm cells through the Urethra.

WHAT IS THE COMMON CAUSE OF PROSTATITIS ?

Common cause of Prostatitis is bacterial infection
Prostatitis could be acute or chronic and can present with a number of symptoms however before discussing the symptoms i will like to discuss briefly the difference between a normal prostate and prostatitis condition .

As indicated in the picture below , the left side shows a healthy prostate that is not inflamed .Without any inflammation the urethra which  is the channel for urine and seminal fluid is free without any constriction resulting in free flow of urine and seminal fluid .
The right side is an infected prostate that is inflamed compressing a  section of the urethra. This constriction on the urethra makes flow of urine and seminal fluid difficult thus resulting in pain along with other symptoms of Prostatitis.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF PROSTATETITIS ?

1. Painful urinating ,Difficult urinating and frequent urinating
2. Blood in urine
3. Groin pain ,abdominal pain ,rectal pain and low back  ache
4. General feeling of unwell ,fatigue , stress (malaise) etc.
5. Painful ejaculation
6. Erectile  disfunction

RISK FACTORS

A number of risk factors could predispose some to Prostatitis , this includes the following :

1. A prior history of prostatitis
2. Having a recent urinary tract infection
3. Enlarge prostate gland
4. Dehydration - not having enough fluid
5. Local pelvic trauma  or inquiry
6. Engaging in rectal intercourse \

TIPS FOR PROMOTING A HEALTHY PROSTATE

Promoting a healthy prostate is about the best way to prevent prostatitis. Adhering to the list below does not guarantee that you will never have prostatitis however it lowers significantly your chances of  developing prostate issues .

1. Regular exercise and weight loss .Exercise is very important for your cardiovascular health and reduces risk of urinary tract symptoms Other health benefit of exercise is that it improves sexual health and reduces the risk of erectile disfunction. Stand up as often as possible , sitting for too long puts pressure on the prostate and can cause inflammation of the prostate gland.
Maintain a healthy weight .

2. Reduce caffeine and alcohol intake .Take more caffeine free tea like green tea and hibiscus tea which is known to contain antioxidants. Caffeine is known to increase pain associated with prostate infection .Avoid large alcohol intake .

3. Be hydrated .Take enough water each day to keep our urine diluted and flush bacteria that could possible cause urinary tract infection which could predispose you to prostatitis.

4. Reduce stress. Men with a very high stress level are more likely to develop prostatitis so it is important to manage your stress level. Take time out to appreciate nature , visit the beach , mountains or hills , observe nature and empty your mind of worries . Talk to a therapist if possible .

5. Practice safe sex .One of the factors that predispose one to prostatitis is rectal intercourse hence it is best to practice safe sex to avoid bacterial infection that could lead to an infected prostate
6. Eat healthy food , avoid too much fast food .Well balanced healthy meal is important for an overall healthy body .
